King and Queen invited to 95th birthday of Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde will attend the celebrations scheduled on Saturday, January 9th to mark the 95th birthday of their uncle, Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg, revealed the Royal Palace in a press release on Tuesday. Grand Duke Jean was born on January 5th, 1921 at Berg castle, and is the son of Grand Duchess Charlotte and Prince Félix of Bourbon-Parma. On April 9th, 1953, he married Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium (1927-2005), eldest sister of the late King Baudouin of Belgium (1930-1993) and King Albert II of Belgium (1934).

During their 52-year marriage, the royal couple had five children: Princess Marie-Astrid (b. 17 February 1954), Henri, Grand Duke (b. 1955), Prince Jean (b. 1957), Princess Margaretha (b. 1957) and Prince Guillaume (b. 1963).

He was a member of the Council of State until 1961, then lieutenant-representative, before succeeding his mother Grand Duchess Charlotte as Grand Duke of Luxembourg on November 12th, 1964, thus becoming the fifth ruler of the dynasty. Grand Duke Jean abdicated in favour of his elder son Prince Henri on October 7th, 2000, after 36 years on the throne. He became a widower in 2005 and currently resides at Fischbach Castle.
