The Flemish Christian Democrats maintain their opposition to a separate social status for refugees

The Flemish Christian Democrats remain opposed to a separate social status for refugees, its President Wouter Beke said on Saturday. He spoke during the party’s New Year reception in Antwerp. He also called for an Islam that shares and encourages European values.

The current refuge crisis was one of the main issues in Wouter Beke’s speech. “There are those that say you cannot take part in politics when you are affected by photos like the one of little Aylan”. “Is that not the essence of Christian democracy?” he asked.

A separate social status, which is desired by the New Flemish Alliance President Bart De Wever , is not an option for the Flemish Christian Democrats. “People have value, not status A or B. Not yesterday, not today, not tomorrow. People are people to us”, said Mr Beke.

The Flemish Christian Democrat President called on the Muslim community to integrate, by accepting our rules and values, and learning Dutch.

“We should speak the same language, literally as well as figuratively”, he said. “Either you want to be part of our society, and that has consequences, or you have no place here”.

Wouter Beke called on members of the Muslim community to begin building a European Islam.
