Train traffic was delayed on the so-called Walloon Railway Backbone, after the death of an individual on a level crossing in the village of Chokier (in the Flémalle municipality) on Sunday evening. So said a spokesperson to the press agency Belga, also adding that trains had had to resume operation on a single track. The accident caused train delays and cancellations. The accident took place shortly before 7.00pm on a level crossing situated near Rue de Fexhe. An individual who, doubtless, would have gone under the barriers, was knocked down by a train completing the journey between Liers and Mouscron, on the Walloon Railway Backbone (route 125). The victim died.
During the evening, train traffic was disrupted in both directions for two hours, before resuming on a single track.
According to the latest available statistics, 11 people died in Belgium in 2014 having been accidentally knocked over by a train, Infrabel has indicated.
