Around 73,000 fined for not submitting their tax return on time

The tax administration has fined around 73,000 Belgians who didn’t submit their tax return in time last year, Het Nieuwsblad said on Sunday. These fines add up to a total of 13 million euros.

People who don’t hand in their tax return on time first of all get an official letter, followed by a reminder saying they might get fines. Despite these warnings, thousands of Belgians did not fill their tax returns.

“We have zero tolerance. If they don’t submit a tax return, they get fined”, explains Francis Adyns, the spokesman for the Finance SPF. The fines start at 50 euros and could go up to as much as 1,250 euros if they continue to forget.
