Iranian president Hassan Rohani plans state visit to Belgium for March 31st

The Iranian President Hassan Rohani is planning a state visit to Belgium and Austria this year, his Chief of Staff Mohammad Nahavandian indicated on Sunday. His visit to Belgium is planned for 31st March, although this date is yet to be confirmed by the Iranian Embassy, several internal Belgian government sources state.

A meeting with the Prime Minister Charles Michel, as well as a visit from the European institutions is part of the schedule, which is in the process of being negotiated according to these sources.

Moreover, numerous Heads of state will go to Iran in the same period.

Since last July when Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear programme, the Islamic republic has been having talks with the West.

In November, a Belgian economic delegation went to Iran for the first time in 35 years. Since the lifting of sanctions forced upon the country, several powers have jumped upon the idea of negotiating deals with the Islamic republic.

Rohani's visit to Italy last week kindled controversy owing to the numerous precautions taken, so as not to “offend” the President. Several nude statues were covered up and wine was banned over dinner.
