28,000 women in Wallonia victims of violence over the last 12 months

Nearly 28,000 women in Wallonia said they had suffered physical and/or sexual violence over the last 12 months. These figures come from the first violence against women survey in Wallonia. The Walloon minister for Social Action and Equal opportunities, Maxime Prévot, spoke about it on Friday. This survey will “allow more efficient action against violence”, the minister said.

The survey is the result of statistical analysis by Iweps (Walloon Institute of Evaluation, Prospective and Statistic) and the SPW (Walloon Public Service). This is the first time these figures have been analysed. They worked in partnership with the OWS (Walloon Health Observatory).

These statistics show nearly 28,000 women in Wallonia said they suffered physical and/or sexual violence over the last 12 months. “More than 25% of assault cases dealt with by the Prosecutors are domestic violence cases. There are also around four rapes reported every day. More than one woman in four living in shelters for battered women is aged between 18 and 25”, Maxime Prévot’s cabinet has said.

The Walloon minister for Social Action and Equal Opportunities thinks the survey is even more worrying as it means the number of undeclared and under-evaluated incidents is even higher.
