OCAM: 450 radicals on file

The Organe de Coordination pour l'Analyse de la Menace (OCAM - the coordinating unit for threat analysis) has completed a review of radicalised individuals in Belgium. The latest report on January 28th, establishes that there are an alarming 450 individuals on the database, compared to 420 in October, the Sudpresse newspaper group reports on Wednesday.

The majority are either from Brussels or Flemish. There are 197 from Brussels and 195 from Flanders. Sudpresse says, quoting both the Interior Ministry and the Federal Prosecutor's Office, that 269 Belgians are currently presumed to be in Syria or in Iraq, particularly within the ranks of so-called Islamic State (Daesh), that is three less than in October.

There are also 31 children listed in the database. The so-called “returnees” - Belgians returning from combat - may comprise 117, compared to 134 last October. There are also 127 individuals bolstering the jihadists by organising the logistics of fighters advancing to Syria and Iraq. Lastly there are 49 cases whose status remains to be determined.
