Trafffic in the Montgomery tunnel will be restricted to a a single traffic lane in the Cambre-Meiser direction from Friday morning, Bruxelles Mobilité (the section of the Public Works Ministry which is responsible for controlling traffic flows during public works) announced on Thursday. Preparations to inspect a works site, anticipated at the end of the week, brought to light a potential slab movement in the tunnel roof, states the organisation.
The Montgomery Tunnel, one of the five Brussels tunnels to closely monitor, is now subject to such monitoring in the Meiser direction, Bruxelles Mobilité explains in a press release.
In this context, more in-depth below ground investigations are anticipated at the end of this week. During the preparation of this works site, dust was noted on the highway, which might suggest a potential roof slab movement.
As a precautionary measure, and whilst awaiting results of investigations anticipated in the coming days, Bruxelles Mobilité has decided to place a prop under the area in question. Consequently, the traffic flow will be restricted to one lane in the Cambre-Meiser direction.
The delay to reopen the lane in question depends both upon the results of the investigation and the potential means to stabilise the site which may be recommended.
