The Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office has confirmed that an investigation has been started.
It says that a complaint was made by the Belgian state relating to a major withholding tax fraud, L'Echo reports on Wednesday.
The amounts embezzled still to be recovered may amount to 350 million euros, according to recent estimates suggested by the daily newspaper.
Last December, the Finance Minister Johan Van Overtveldt confirmed his department’s suspicions of significant fraud, the taxman having observed a significant increase in withholding tax reimbursements. A similar phenomenon has been seen in Denmark, where the total embezzlement was close to a billion euros.
