The number of cars motoring on electricity, natural gas or hydrogen has tripled in three years, it emerges from relevant SPF Mobilité figures. Amongst other traffic-related issues, the organisation publishes vehicle data. Het Laatste Nieuws has published these figures today (Monday). However, such vehicles represent a mere 0.2% of Belgian cars on the road at present.
At January 1st, 2016, a total of 13,901 so-called “green” vehicles were registered in Belgium. Three-quarters of them (72%) are in Flanders, with 15.1% in Wallonia and 11.9% in Brussels. Some 80% of these cars are electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
The majority (73%) of these cars are business or leased cars. So-called “clean cars” only represent 0.2% of the all Belgian cars on the road. So these SPF Mobilité figures indicate. “This is, in particular, explained by our prudent fiscal policy in this field,” Joeri de Ridder, the President of Avere (the European network of electric cars) considers.
Avere is arguing very strongly in favour of lower taxation of these vehicles.
