A hundred additional inspectors in fight against social security fraud

The Secretary of State for Privacy and the Fight against Social Fraud, Bart Tommelein (Open Vld - Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats), anticipates recovering a further 50 million euros from fraudulent claimants. This is due to the recruitment of around one hundred additional inspectors, the amalgamation of the benefit fraud inspection services and heavier fines, De Morgen and Het Laatste Nieuws reports.

The additional one hundred inspectors should be on the battlefield from July 1st. They will focus upon the fight against social dumping and the so-called false self-employed (those who are illegally registering as self-employed within the country).

This recruitment has taken place as part of a broader reform of the Social Inspection Department. “There is currently too much fragmentation within the department,” Bart Tommelein says.

He wishes to pool together the current seven services into three departments. Tommelein elaborates, “The objectives here are increased efficiency, lower overhead costs and therefore more fiscal flexibility for more on the ground initiatives.”
