Jan Jambon's ideas: members of the public to instigate defamation proceedings against Minister Jambon

Members of the public, supported by organisations one of which is the Movement against Racism Anti-semitism and Xenophobia, on Tuesday evening indicated that they will lodge individual proceedings against Jan Jambon “for defamation, libel and inciting hatred”. These proceedings echo the ideas of Mr Jambon in the press, stating that “A significant part of the Muslim community danced during the March 22nd attacks.” For these citizens, supported by MRAX, the explanations which the Interior Minister gave to the Chamber of Representatives do not provide “any of the information requested.”

"Bearing in mind the unacceptable thoughtlessness which the Minister used as an excuse to utter accusatory cut-and-dried statements and also those of his peer group, which are no less shocking as they seem to ratify his ideas, we now consider that it is both our legal right and moral duty to fight back by taking legal action, as Belgian citizens of the Muslim faith," Mehdi Kassou, one of those initiating the proceedings, stressed.

The claimants invite "all those, whether citizens or associations, who consider that it is necessary to put up a firm front against these statements" to join them in making similar complaints in the matter. Individual complaints in this matter are to be lodged as a form of joint action with the Brussels Public Prosecutor on Friday May 6th from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
