On Tuesday, the superintendent Pierre Vandersmissen was knocked out with a bottle by a protester who hit the policeman on the head from behind. The Belga press agency has released a video of the incident. After it had occurred, the individual quickly fled the scene. The policeman, laying unconscious on the ground, was then a sitting target for further attacks.
His colleagues, in the end, succeeded in protecting him before he was admitted to hospital.
The superintendent, who was merely armed with tear gas and was not wearing a helmet, attempted to push away violent demonstrators.
The police were heavily deployed, following the incident, to remove any troublemakers.
