Extension of detention for two suspects in terrorist case

On Friday, the Malines court in chambers extended the detention d'Adil Z., aged 19, and Naim R., aged 18., arrested last Friday as part of a terrorism file, the Federal Prosecutor's Office indicated on Monday in a communiqué. The suspects, all Belgian nationals, are suspected of wanting to recruit individuals to send to war-torn Syria or Libya.

As part of the Federal Prosecutor's terrorism investigation, the Antwerp federal police Antwerp executed, on May 25th, eight arrest warrants at the request of the Malines investigating judge, in particular at Ternat, Borgerhout and Antwerp. No weapon has been discovered nor indeed explosives.

Four people suspected of having wanted to recruit individuals to go to war-torn Syria or Libya, were however taken away for a hearing. Some of them had the intention to leave of their own accord and join the terrorist group Islamic State.

One of the individuals arrested was made subject to an arrest warrant and another made subject to electronic tagging. The two others were freed subject to their respecting strict conditions. All were found guilty participating in terrorist group activities.

On the basis of interim investigative findings, it turns out that there were possibly plans for an attack in Belgium. For now, no link has been established with the investigation opened following the March 22nd, 2016 attacks at Brussels Airport and the Maelbeek metro station.
