The terrorist threat hangs over “everything that represents an institution” or the country itself

The terrorist threat that led to security around some Ministers and their families being reinforced on Friday also hangs over non-political figures, the federal Minister Willy Borsus said on Sunday. It also “seriously threatens” people that represent national institutions and Belgium, he told “C’est pas tous les jours dimanche”, (RTL). He didn’t go into detail because of security risks, but he didn’t exclude the King himself.

He spoke about an evaluation by Ocam, the Organisation for the Coordination of Terrorist Threat Analysis. It said 4 federal Ministers were under threat: Prime Minister Charles Michel (MR), Foreign Affairs Minister Didier Reynders (MR), Home Affairs Minister Jan Jambon (New Flemish Alliance), and Justice Minister Koen Geens (Christian Democrats).

Several houses all across Belgium were searched early on Saturday as part of a terrorist investigation. These were mainly in the Brussels region.

Mr Borsus said the threat has many forms, is constantly changing, and is ongoing. “Anything that symbolically represents an institution, the State, or the country” is a potential target, according to the MR Minister. He also spoke of a “network” and “ramifications”, identified as part of terrorist enquiries and complimented the “police’s well-adapted reaction”.
