“Mini-Miss” contests prohibited in Belgium

“Mini-Miss” contests prohibited in Belgium

The Minister of Employment, the Economy and Consumer Affairs, Kris Peeters, has taken a decision upon child beauty contests in Belgium. He says that they are illegal, La Dernière Heure states today (Monday).

The Inspectorate for Supervision of Social Labour Laws says that the concept of a beauty contest presents “risks for children's physical, mental, moral and social maturity.” For Kris Peeters, such contests are “inappropriate.” The Minister adds, “Participation in choosing the “Mini-Miss” or “Mini-Mister” falls under the legislation relating to child labour. This means that it is prohibited.”

The first child beauty contest should have taken place this coming July 21st in Belgium's very own La Panne.
