Brexit: Charles Michel says “I'm not prepared to foot the bill for their decision”

“Brexit is a victory for a particular form of populism.” Charles Michel, the Belgian Prime Minister, expressed this view on Tuesday morning when speaking on La Première (part of the RTBF network). He added that he was “not prepared to foot the bill” for the British decision to withdraw from the European Union.

Mr Michel, once again, pleaded for the UK notify the European Commission of its desire to leave the EU “as soon as possible,” to ensure clarity in the interests of all parties concerned.

The Prime Minister, moreover, guaranteed that he would “use every means available to him to protect and defend the economic and social interests” of Belgium. He insisted upon the need to explain to Belgium's population how Europe represents “added value” for the country.

The "Leave" victory in the referendum upon the United Kingdom’s relationship with the EU will be the main theme of a meeting of European heads of state and heads of government. This is being held on Tuesday and Wednesday in Brussels.
