In 2015, traffic accidents caused the death of 732 persons on Belgium’s roads, according to figures published Tuesday by the Statistics General Directorate of the Economy SPF. For the second consecutive year, there has been no decrease in the number of dead on Belgium’s roads.
In 2015, 40,303 road accidents were tallied, with a total of 52,571 victims, among which 732 lost their lives in the 30 days following the accident, according to data of the Statistics General Directorate. Half of those deceased were drivers or passengers of private vehicles.
Motorcyclists (drivers of motorcycles and mopeds) represent 16% of victims killed, and pedestrians represent 12%. The proportion of cyclists went up from 8% in 2010 to 11% five years later. Furthermore, accidents involving lorries represent 5.3% of accidents, but generate 14.5% of deaths on our roads. The number of dead has not gone down since 2013, stated the Statistics General Directorate.
In fact, it increased by 0.7% between 2014 and 2015. Last year, 727 persons lost their lives on the road. In the 2005-2013 period, the number of dead as a result of traffic accidents went down by an average of 6.5% per year. Contrarily, the number of seriously injured decreased by 6.7% in one year, from 4,502 in 2014 to 4,201 in 2015.
