The Brussels free Wi-Fi network, which is currently accessible in certain public spaces is on track to be installed in metro stations. The Secretary of State for Information Technology, Bianca Debaets (of the Flemish Christian Democrats), said yesterday (Wednesday), whilst on the sidelines of a ‘Pokemon’ hunt in the capital’s streets.
“The new significant stage is the installation of Wi-Fi in metro stations. The stop Porte de Hal will be the first to be equipped, from the beginning of September,” explained Ms Debaets. “The network will then be gradually extended to other stations.”
There are 54 hotspots currently live in the capital, but the plan is to add 10 to 15 per year, the Secretary of State said. She stated that, on average, 4,000 individuals are using free Wi-Fi each week.
This network allows families who have either no or little access to the Internet to use it for free, but also foreign visitors can avoid extortionate roaming costs.
