“D'Ardennen”, by the producer Robin Pront, has been chosen to fly the flag for Belgium in the film Oscars in the category “Best Foreign Language Film.” This was announced yesterday (Tuesday) by the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (known as VAF) in a communiqué.
The Oscars awards ceremony will take place on February 26th, 2017, in Los Angeles. Films nominated will be revealed on January 24th next year. However, a shortlist of nine titles will be announced at the end of December.
“The jury which decided to send Belgium to the Oscars this year was made up of Juliette Duret from Bozar Cinema, the director Frédéric Fonteyne, the scriptwriter Malin-Sarah Gozin and the director Nathalie Basteyns,” the VAF stresses.
“D'Ardennen” (which literally translates as “The Ardennes”) tells the story of Dave and his brother Kenneth. Their lives are entirely transformed after a burglary which backfires.
The thriller which features Veerle Baetens, who has already experienced the race for the Oscars in 2014 with “The Broken Circle Breakdown” directed by Felix Van Groeningen, Kevin Janssens and Jeroen Perceval.
Rolling last year, as a world premiere, at the Toronto International Film Festival, Robin Pront’s first feature film was also shown at the opening of the Ghent Film Festival, as well as in Rotterdam, Glasgow and Cleveland.
“D'Ardennen” is also part of a set of fifty feature films battling it out in the nominations for the European Film Awards 2016 (EFA).
The EFA’s 29th staging will take place on December 10th in Wroclaw (in Poland), which is the European Capital of Culture 2016.
