The Belgian Royal Family’s protection cost 15.2 million euros in 2015. This is per figures issued by the Interior Minister, Jan Jambon, to the deputy Barbara Pas of Vlaams Belang (the right wing Flemish/Brussels Nationalist and Populist party).
The Royal Family’s protection is provided by a federal police secondment division, specifically for the purpose.
This division devoted some 265,300 man-hours of work in 2015, 175,300 man-hours to protect royal estates and 90,000 man-hours in protecting royal figures.
In 2014, the overall cost of the federal police’s royal secondment amounted to a monumental 15.5 million euros. In 2013, it was 15.8 million euros.
In June 2015, the Interior Minister had indicated that he would test the waters with majority partners involved in this secondment, as to the possibility of withdrawing this task from the federal police.
