Knokke-Heist and Molenbeek tie for highest bad-debt rates

Knokke-Heist, one of Belgium’s richest communes, and Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, one of its poorest, have the same percentage of delinquent debtors, even though residents of the former earn on average two and a half time more that people living in the latter, the Intrum Justitia debt management company reported on Friday. Listing the country’s 10 richest and 10 poorest communes, Intrum Justitia found that the number of bad debtors was only slightly lower in the wealthier communes that in poor ones.

In Knokke-Heist, the 5th wealthiest commune, there were 10.56 debt recovery files for every 100 persons while there were 10.78 per 100 in Molenbeek, the second poorest of Belgium’s communes.

The richest commune, Laethem-saint-Martin, had 7.84 debt-recovery files per 100 residents as against 19.77 per 100 in the poorest, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.
