Van Damme is put forward for two MLS awards.

Jelle Van Damme features amongst the three nominees for the title “Defender of the Year” and “Newcomer of the Year” in North American Competitive Football (MLS or Major League Soccer). The list of nominees was revealed yesterday (Tuesday).

During his first season at L.A. Galaxy, Jelle Van Damme has made an impression.

He is alongside Matt Hedges (Dallas) and the Swede, Axel Sjoberg (who plays for Colorado Rapids), for “Defender of the Year”, the trophy for which will be awarded on November 11th.

The former player for Standard Liège and R.S.C. Anderlecht, aged 33, also features in the list of nominees for “Newcomer of the Year.”

This includes the Norwegian, Ola Kamara (of the Columbus Crew), and the Uruguayan Nicolás Lodeiro (of the Seattle Sounders).

The winner for this will be known on November 21st.

Votes are cast by players, staff, and the media involved in MLS.

For the “Player of the Year” trophy, the former Anderlecht player, Sacha Kljestan (of the New York Red Bulls), the Spaniard David Villa (of New York City) and the Englishman Bradley Wright-Philippes (of the New York Red Bulls), are the three nominees.

The winner will be known on December 6th.

On Sunday, L.A. Galaxy will play the return match in the play-off quarter finals against the Colorado Rapids on their home turf.

The Californian team triumphed 1-0 at home last Sunday.
