Case of stolen bank cards solved thanks to train conversation

Police in Eastern Flanders solved a case of bank-card theft on Thursday thanks to a conversation overheard by an alert passenger. The passenger overheard a man and a woman discussing stolen bank cards while travelling on a train on Thursday afternoon. “When the suspects came off the train and went to [an] automated teller machine the man called the police and the couple were arrested,” the Office of the Public Prosecutor of Eastern Flanders said, based on information from local police.

On the previous night, a house in Erpe-Mère, Eastern Flanders, had been burgled by a thief who made off with bank cards, a bunch of keys, a handbag, a laptop and a camera. “The bank cards corresponded to those stolen during the burglary,” the prosecutor’s office reported.

The suspect, a 37-year-old woman from the town of Alost, is no stranger to the police. She admitted to the burglary and appeared in court on Friday. The prosecution has asked for her to be remanded in custody.
