Thirty hooligans arrested in Mechlin

Twenty-two KV Mechlin supporters and 13 supporters from Standard Liège were arrested on Sunday afternoon. This was whilst they were about to clash before the match between the two teams. The local Mechlin/Willebroek police zone indicated this today (Monday).

The police said that the hooligans had prepared themselves during recent days, with a view to organising a street fight.

They were all charged under the framework of the football rules.

It is worthy of note that the supporters were, in particular, armed with truncheons and combat gloves.

They were locked up in the cells of the Mechlin police station until the end of the match, which passed off without a major incident.

“In conjuction with our police force, I wish to put everything in place so that football matches are and remain a celebration,” the Mayor of Mechlin, Bart Somers (from the Open Vld -Flemish Liberals and Democrats), said when giving his reaction to events.
