The Ambassador of Burundi in Brussels, Jérémie Banigwaninzigo, has been called to Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi. This information, disclosed yesterday (Thursday) by La Libre, was confirmed by the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
The daily publication says, he is due to leave our country today (Thursday).
Bujumbura has confirmed, for some time, that Belgium has played a "destabilising role" in the crisis. This has been spreading across this central African country for a year and a half.
The holding last month, in the Belgian Senate of a conference on the Burundi crisis, and in which members of the opposition participated, might possibly be at issue.
Several sources indicated to La Libre that Burundi wished to close its Brussels embassy.
This meeting called by Mr Banigwaninzigo could constitute a test run. One such source considers, “That is generally how they act.”
Six months after the beginning of the political crisis in Burundi, the former Belgium Amassador went to Brussels. The level of trust between the two countries was at a new low Bujumbura indicated.
In the months which followed, anti-Belgian speeches were regularly made in Burundi. At the end of November, fresh action was led against the Belgian embassy, to the point that the UN was actually anticipating sending a Commission of Human Rights experts to the country.
The leader of the ruling party, Evariste Ndayishimiye, then declared, “We have located our enemy, Belgium.” He even accused Belgium of “preparing for genocide in Burundi.”
