Suicide rate twice as high in Wallonia as in Europe

The suicide rate in Wallonia, is around twice as high as the European average. This is per a study by Solidaris (the Socialist mutual orgnisation) and the suicide prevention centre Un Pass dans l'Impasse reported today (Thursday) in La Dernière Heure.

The publication indicates that the Walloon suicide rate is 20.48 per year for every 100,000 inhabitants, whilst the European figure is 11.8.

In 2014, according to the latest available figures, 1,896 Belgians committed suicide, 721 being in Wallonia and 121 in Brussels. Across the entire country, this averages out at nearly 6 suicides per day.
