Suriname: major cocaine seizure headed for Belgium
Nearly 1,000 kilogrammes of cocaine were discovered by police and customs officers in the port of Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname.

Nearly 1,000 kilogrammes of cocaine were discovered by police and customs officers in the port of Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. The drug haul, with an estimated street value of around 40 million euros, was found in two sea containers.

It is thus one of the most significant seizures that this South American country has ever seen.

One of the containers was on the point of being placed aboard a vessel bound for the port of Antwerp, and the other was headed for the Netherlands.

The dozens of sports bags contained a total of 978 kilogrammes of cocaine. They were intercepted on February 6th. However the Suriname police did not provide further information on this matter yesterday (Thursday).

In the meantime, 11 suspects have been arrested, two of whom were Suriname customs staff. At this stage a 12th suspect, a port worker, is still wanted for questioning.

To add insult to injury, at the end of last year customs inspectors in Guadeloupe had already discovered 148 kilogrammes of cocaine in a container going from Suriname to Belgium.
