March this year was exceptionally hot, according to a weather report by the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) released on Saturday. The average temperature was 9.5°C in Uccle, whereas 6.8°C is normal for the season. It equalled the 1991 record.
The temperature in March didn’t go below 2°C. The 2014 record was beaten by quite a lot: the lowest temperature that year was 0.4°C. March 2016 was the 5th with no freezing temperatures since 1901 (1983, 2003, 2012 and 2014).
The average maximum temperature was 13.7°C (10.4°C is normal) and the average minimum temperature was 5.3°C (usually 3.1°C). This is exceptionally high, according to the IRM.
The record for the highest temperature on a 30th of March is Uccle was beaten, with 21.8°C this year. In the rest of the country, the highest temperatures were on the 30/03 in Angleur (Liège), where the maximum was 23.5°C. The lowest temperatures in the country were just a few days before, on the 22nd in Elsenborn (Bütgenbach), with -6.7°C.
March was abnormally dry and sunny. There were 155 hours and 52 minutes of sun (normal for the season is 113 hours and 57 minutes of sun).
