Belgians have been paying more tax since 2014, according to a sp.a study centre

Taxes have not gone down since 2014, when the MR – N-VA – CD&V – Open VLD alliance came into power, although the Federal government claimed they had. This is according to calculations done by a study centre that works with the opposition sp.a party, which the De Zondag Sunday paper spoke about on Sunday.

“The government has said that people have more net income because of the taxshift.  However, we are getting different messages from the population, who are saying that their bills are going up quicker than their earnings”, says Flemish Socialist MP Peter Vanvelthoven.

The study centre’s calculations, which are based on figures provided by the monitoring committee, show the amount of tax workers are paying has gone up by 7.9% in three years. In 2014, individuals paid 79 billion euros in tax on earnings and consumer goods. This went up to 85 billion euros in 2017, an increase of 7.9%. “This government is hiding the fact that taxes have gone up”, the MP says.
