The Federal Nuclear Control Agency (AFCN) has once again refused to give Engie Electrabel the Physical Protection for Nuclear Installations safety certificate, L’Echo and De Tijd reported on Friday. The Belgian Nuclear authority refused to give them the certificate back in November, and gave Electrabel until the 1st of May to improve safety at its sites.
The papers say the AFCN reported its demands had not been met on the 1st of May.
The AFCN has not released any more details, but this issue only concerns Doel 1 and 2. Engie Electrabel revealed Doel 3 and 4 have the certificate in a press release.
“Generally, all the installations have made good progress”, the Agency says. It said even at the installations that are not yet up to standard, “the safety measures currently in place are adequate”.
The AFCN’s decision “is linked to work that has been planned so the reactors can keep going for another 10 years. This work is in the action plan the Agency has agreed to, and the Agency will oversee it”, the company said. Most of the work will be done by the end of 2019. “Engie Electrabel will give the AFCN regular updates on these projects”.
