1 in 6 Europeans and 1 in 8 Belgians live in “unhealthy” accommodation
Belgians living in very humid accommodation are 65% more likely to say that they have particular health issues than those living in healthy airy conditions.

One in six Europeans say they live in “unhealthy” accommodation. Such conditions include a damp building, inappropriate temperatures or a lack of daylight. This is one of the conclusions of a report compiled by three agencies and independent research centres, which have cross-compiled Eurostat and OECD statistics, an investigation conducted among 12,000 Europeans, and more than 200 scientific publications.

The report findings appear in La Libre Belgique today (Wednesday). In Belgium, one in eight people report living in a harmful building of some description, according to the same report.

Moreover Belgians who live in very humid accommodation are 65% more likely to state that they have particular health issues, than those living in healthy and airy accommodation. The latter also appear to suffer more as a result of a lack of light.

These Belgians are 79% more likely to declare themselves in poor health than those living in a house, or apartment, with natural light galore. This report which is entitled “Healthy Homes Barometer 2017”, commissioned by the company Velux, is being placed before the European Parliament today (Wednesday).
