Céline Fremault says Marghem’s apparent intentions are “incomprehensible”
Céline Fremault is furious with Marie-Christine Marghem over the latter's statements on Belgium's climate objectives.

The intention of the Federal Minister, Marie-Christine Marghem (MR), to renegociate Belgium’s climate objectives “is incomprehensible even irresponsible.” This is the view of the Brussels Minister for the Environment and Energy, Céline Fremault (cdH). Fremault laments, “Here we stand at a time when the world is barely managing to come to terms with Donald Trump’s declarations and intentions, and what do we have? Ms Marghem attempting to position Belgium squarely on the map of climate-sceptic nations.”

She goes on, “The Belgian objective results from a given European equilibrium and trying to follow it should unite the commitments of all ‘four governments.’” [the Belgian government and those of Flanders, Brussels, Wallonia]…Minister Marghem therefore has no right to speak on behalf of Belgium without the full agreement of the other three governments.”

She further states, “This unfortunate statement does not correspond to the view of the Brussels-Capital region. Brussels as the headquarters of the European institutions must be an example and provide unwavering support to the European objective in the fight against global warming, as should Belgium.”

The Minister is demanding that, “Ms Marghem’s communication should be subject to formal discussions during the next National Climate Commission, which will bring together all federated entities to discuss the subject.”
