The police’s control service, the General Inspection Unit, needs to increase their staff by 25%, the Het Nieuwsblad reported on Sunday. The head of the Unit has retired, but continues to work until a successor can be found.
The General Inspection Unit is the second, less well known, police control service. The other is the P Committee. The GIU normally has at least 96 employees, but that has dropped over the last few years. This means their staff are struggling with the workload.
The service has been under the ad interim management of General Inspector François Adam for 8 years. He officially retired on the 1st of August, and needs to be replaced. That doesn’t seem likely to happen anytime soon, so the Inspector is continuing to work. He already handed in his security badge and weapons, so has to access the offices with a visitor’s badge.
“There has been a delay as the favourite candidate pulled out”, confirmed Olivier Van Raemdonck, the spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister Jan Jambon. “That’s why we asked Mr Adam to stay on, until the 1st of September”.
The Minister is also worried about the fact the service is short of staff. “We are working on recruiting as much as we can”, the spokesman said.
