Catalan attacks – 300 people attend a remembrance ceremony for the Belgian victim in Tongres

A remembrance ceremony for Elke Vanbockrijck (44), who died in the Barcelona attacks, was held on Saturday. It took place on the main square of Tongres, her hometown. More than 300 people turned up to remember her and the thirteen others who lost their lives on Thursday.

Mrs Vanbockrijck was in Barcelona with her husband and her two sons, aged 10 and 13, when a van ran into the crowd at Ramblas. Ramblas is in the town centre of Barcelona. The van hit Mrs Vanbockrijck, but the rest of the family were unharmed.

The 300 attendees lit candles and left flowers in memory of the victim. Tongres has opened a condolence book, which is accessible at the Praetorium administrative centre. Those that want to can leave messages for the victim’s loved ones during opening hours, Monday to Friday.

Earlier, Tongres mayor Patrick Dewael (Open Vld) had called for people not to give in to terrorism and face it together.
