Eggs contaminated with Fipronil: Around 40 countries reported cases

A total of 40 countries have been affected by egg contamination with the insecticide Fipronil. Some 24 out of 28 EU countries reported cases presenting traces of the anti-parasite, as well as 16 other non-EU states.

In the EU, only Lithuania, Portugal, Cyprus and Croatia have managed to avoid the scandal up to now. This was indicated by the spokeswoman from the European Commission, Anca Paduraru, to the German DPA press agency. Moreover, there are cases known outside of the EU, in particular the United States, Russia, South Africa and Turkey.

Meeting in Tallinn in Estonia on Tuesday, European ministers of agriculture are due to tackle the issue. Denis Ducarme is there, continuing to open his European meetings of ministers of agriculture by a crisis in which Belgium is playing a key role. Fipronil, an insecticide enabling eradication of red mite, has been used in 93 Belgian poultry farms.
