Prince Laurent absent for the 20th anniversary of his foundation

The Prince Laurent Foundation celebrated its 20th anniversary in La Hulpe, in the Walloon Brabant, on Saturday evening. Princess Claire and the royal couple’s children were there, but the Prince was unable to attend for health reasons.

Founded in 1997, the public accessible Prince Laurent Foundation aims to improve animal wellbeing by helping the owner. It helps people in difficulty by providing veterinary treatment for their pets. It treats more than 12,000 animals every year at its dispensaries in Brussels, Antwerp, Seraing, Hornu and Ghent.

For the last six years, the Foundation has also run a night shelter for homeless people with dogs during the winter. Residents can get a bed and food.

Prince Laurent did not attend the event celebrating his Foundation’s 20th anniversary because he was ill. He produced a medical certificate when Prime Minister Charles Michel requested a meeting with him after his controversial visit to the embassy in China in July last year. The head of the Federal government wants Prince Laurent to be “appropriately sanctioned”, which he will discuss with King Philippe.
