A 17th century atlas sells for more than 100,000 euros in Bruges

A Latin-language atlas by Brabançon cartographer Abraham Ortelius dated 1603 sold for 106,000 euros at a Bruges auction on Saturday. The first part of the collection previously held at the former Library at the Augustins de Eindhoven Institute was up for auction.

The atlas, titled “Theatrum orbis terrarum”, contains 151 maps and five engravings. Colour was added by hand later.

A Bruges accounting manuscript from 1475 went for 7,000 euros.

The sale was organised by Van de Wiele Auctions. The second part of the Library collection will go under the hammer next spring.
