University of Leuven staff member dismissed after “overstepping boundaries” with students
The student network of trusted individuals has proven effective in this case.

The University of Leuven (known locally as “KU Leuven”) has dismissed one of its staff linked to the Faculty of Industrial Engineering Sciences. The man has been proven to have behaved inappropriately towards students. This has been indicated by the Rector of the institution, Luc Sels, confirming information which appeared in De Standaard. The member of staff was an adviser for issues relating, in particular, to scholarships and examinations.

The incidents go back to the first half of the year and were indicated by students in the “network of trusted individuals”. The latter was specifically implemented by KU Leuven. The university immediately decided to dismiss this member of staff.

The man being a trade union representative, the case was however passed to the employment tribunal. It considered the facts to be proven last Friday. The staff member therefore had his contract of employment terminated.

The Rector stresses, “It shows the efficiency of our ‘network of trusted individuals’, to which students can indicate inappropriate behaviour.” He adds, “This dismissal is a new signal that KU Leuven will absolutely not tolerate such behaviour, and even less when directed at students.”
