The police now have war-time weapons

Local and Federal police now have access to semi-automatic weapons and war-time ammunition. They have been given them so they can defend themselves against AK-47 Kalashnikovs, which have been used in terrorist attacks in the past. Equally, these new weapons could stop a vehicle, the Mediahuis papers reported on Saturday.

“A new calibre has been authorised to maximise the chances of neutralisation”, the Home Affairs Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA) explained.

Officers can now use the much heavier 7.62 x 35 mm ammunition. “This is war-time ammunition”, says arms expert Eddy Van Herbrugge. “It’s equivalent to the bullets used in an AK-47, which is very popular with those involved in organised crime. One was also used during the Bataclan attack in Paris two years ago. This ammunition also could pierce an engine to stop a vehicle”.
