“Flemish nationalists do not have the same courage as Catalonians”

“Flemish nationalists do not have the same courage as Catalonians”

In an interview with L’Echo on Saturday, Federal MP Kristof Calvo (Greens) said the crisis in Spain “should be handled appropriately by a Prime Minister” as it affects Belgian politics.
“A crisis like this should be handled appropriately by a Prime Minister, and not via Theo Francken’s Twitter account”, the Flemish ecologist said. He is originally from Catalonia, but moved to Antwerp at the age of six.

He said “the New Flemish Alliance does not have the courage of its convictions, the courage of the Catalonians who want independence and who dared to fight for independence for Catalonia and the Catalonian people”.

In Belgium, “the New Flemish Alliance doesn’t fight. And it doesn’t for the pure and simple reason that only 10% of Flemish people are in favour of Flemish independence”, Mr Calvo said.

He continued his argument by saying that the nationalist party “would score a major own goal if they tried to fight for independence, even though it is number one on their agenda. But the N-VA doesn’t have the courage of its convictions. They are nationalist traders who go where the wind goes”.

“Today, the New Flemish Alliance has become almost a soft version of Vlaams Belang… The N-VA pits people and communities against each other and creates division, which goes against what we stand for”, the Malines MP added.
