More than 20 town halls and other public buildings in Belgium were lit up in orange on Saturday. This is part of an information campaign about sexual and interfamilial violence towards women. The campaign will take place from the 25th of November to the 10th of December. Brussels town hall, the Sportpaleis in Antwerp and the casino in Ostende will take part.
The campaign comes after an appeal by the United Nations Secretary Antonio Guterres and the women’s NGO Soroptimist International (SI). Their “Orange the World” event aims to highlight the problem of physical, psychological and sexual violence towards women.
SI is one of the biggest recognised women’s NGOs in the world, with 80,000 members and 3,000 active clubs in 132 countries. There are 58 clubs in Belgium, and they have more than 1,700 members.
Belgium is taking part in the event for the first time. “We think there is still a lot of work to do to combat violence against women throughout the world. This year, the “Orange the World” campaign will be held in Belgium for the first time and we are very proud”, says Griet De Prycker, one of the officials for the Ypres NGO.
