Police soon able to check validity of driver’s licenses on Belgium's roads

Belgian police will “very soon” be equipped with a system that enables them to know immediately during road checks whether a driver has a valid driver’s license, making it impossible for drivers to claim that they lost theirs when in fact they no longer have the right to drive, the spokesman of the Federal Minister of Mobility, Francois Bellot (Reformist Movement) said on Monday. After a man who did not have a valid license was involved in a hit-and-run accident in Hasselt on Saturday, Leuven Police Court judge Kathleen Stinckens revealed that she has had to deal with an increasing number of defendants who disregard the fact that they were banned from driving.

In future, police on Belgium’s roads will have direct access to a data base where they can check whether a driver has a valid license.

“It’s almost done,” Bellot’s cabinet said. “There are only few technical aspects left to fix. Very soon the police will be able to verify whether someone who claims to have lost or forgotten his/her license is justified in saying so.”
