Bad weather injures many in Flanders

Bad weather has injured many persons, one of them seriously, in Flanders, and relief services there have been overwhelmed by calls, mostly about fallen trees and damaged roofs and tiles. In Antwerp, stormy winds injured four persons, including a woman now in a serious state after being hit on the head by a metal plate. A tree fell on a doctor’s office and in Deurne, a roof was blown away. The Antwerp fire service had to activate a call centre of its own (03 338 13 38), since the 1722 hotline was oversaturated.

In Flemish Brabant, dozens of callers reported fallen trees, and damage to tiles and roofs of chalets or garages. The fire services are urging residents to remain at home wherever possible.

In the province of Limburg, part of the roof of a covered ski run in the town of Peer was blown away, mayor Steven Matheï said, and four persons were injured. The wind also sent the roof of a primary school in Gruitrode flying. No one was injured but the pupils had to be evacuated.

The East Flanders fire services also received calls for hundreds of interventions. In Ghent, these were mostly about fallen trees and damaged roofs. “Many people were also slightly injured after being tossed about by the wind,” a spokesperson said.

Finally, in West Flanders, most of the damage was related to damaged roofs and uprooted trees.
