The number of humanitarian regularisation requests at an all-time low, says Theo Francken

124 foreign nationals submitted a request for humanitarian regularisation in December 2017, the State Secretary for Asylum and Immigration Theo Francken wrote on Facebook on Saturday. The N-VA MP said it is the lowest monthly figure for decades. He added that the figure for 2017 is the lowest ever recorded.

Theo Francken said these figures could be explained by the fact that foreign nationals, except children, have to pay 350 euros to submit their request. The absence of collective regularisation has also had an influence on this decrease.

There were 2,549 regularisation requests submitted for humanitarian reasons in 2017. The State Secretary added that more decisions were made last year to reduce the backlog that had accumulated. “More people were regularised: 941 in 2016 and 1,443 in 2017 (54% increase). 3,782 regularisation requests were refused in 2016 compared to 5,153 in 2017 (34% increase)”.
