Queen visits Ghana as part of Sustainable Development Goals

Queen Mathilde and the Minister for Development Cooperation, Alexander De Croo (Open Vld), are going to Ghana on Wednesday for a three-day mission, as part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They are ascertaining how Ghana is implementing these goals, and will visit various projects and companies involved in such undertakings.

At the request of the former UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, Queen Mathilde has been the “Champion” of the SDGs since 2016. In this capacity she was invited to Ghana by the President Nana Akufo-Addo. Together with the Norwegian Prime Minister, Erna Solberg, the President co-chairs the group of SDG Champions.

Upon arrival, the Queen and the Minister, Alexander De Croo, will visit examples of projects which are striving to implement SDGs, paying particular attention to those in the spheres of education, health, including mental health, and the economic empowerment of women.

The Palais Royal stressed, “The Queen will encourage local initiatives having a real impact on the population’s daily lives, and will speak with local communities.”

In Ghana, more than 38% of girls between 15 and 19 have been faced with forms of sexual violence, whilst 21% are married before the age of 18 (this figure increases to 36% in the north of the country).

Following the Millennium Goals, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, adopted in 2015, aim to alleviate poverty, strengthen equality and justice, and fight against the effects of climate change by 2030.
