2017: more than 30 million unclaimed inheritances
Although estates with no heir or heirs recorded a total of €14,921,503 during 2016, the same comparative figure reached €30,173,533.73 in 2017.

Sudpresse is reporting on Tuesday that the FPS Finance beat previous records in 2017, in terms of unclaimed inheritances. Such sums have ended up in the Belgian government coffers. Although estates with no heir or heirs recorded a total of €14,921,503 during 2016, the same comparative figure reached €30,173,533.73 in 2017. This shows the total value of such estates doubled within a year.

If no heir for such estate comes forward, after a time period of 30 years, the value in the estate reverts to the Belgian state. It must then pay applicable death duties to the regions. In 2017, €5.4 million fell into the hands of the Flemish, Brussels and Walloon regions combined (the figure was €4.8 million in the previous year).
