The theft of improperly stored weapons costs Multitra its licence

The Verviers business Multitra Logistics has lost its licence for exporting, importing and transporting weapons and ammunition. This is because several dozen improperly stored hunting weapons were stolen in May, Sudpresse reported on Saturday.

In May 2017, several dozen hunting weapons were stolen from Transmec Belgium SPRL, a Multitra Logistics sub-contractor. They had simply been left in a car park when they were taken. The weapons came from the FN in Herstal and were heading to England. Transmec does not have the necessary approval to transport these weapons, Sudpresse said.

As a consequence, Multitra had its licence for exporting, importing and transporting weapons and ammunition refused by the Justice Minister in September 2017. It has just invested more than three million euros in infrastructures for transporting and storing weapons, says Sudpresse.

The company appealed to the State Council, which turned them down. The High Court agreed with an August 2017 statement by the King’s Prosecutor for Liège, Philippe Dulieu. The Prosecutor spoke of “unforgiveable negligence” and said Multitra’s sub-contracting was “alarming”. “A normal package through the post appears to be handled with more care and have more guarantees”, he said.

The Liège Prosecutor fined the two companies. They will “probably be summoned before the Correctional Tribunal”, he said.

The company has declined to comment.
