Prolonging nuclear plants would be a boon to Electrabel

Prolonging the generation of nuclear energy in Belgium would earn the energy utility Engie Electrabel 850 million euros annually, according to a Planning Office report submitted to Energy Minister Marie Christine Marghem, De Morgen newspaper reported on Tuesday. If the plants are kept running, the utility can produce energy under market prices.

Investors in solar panels, windmills or gas plants would lose out. Prolonging the generation of nuclear energy would cause them to lose 321 million euros a year. The Planning Office warned that such losses “may delay the energy transition since green investments may suffer and even dry up.”
