On Monday, more than 120 organisations launched an appeal for a national demonstration against racism, hate, discrimination, inequality and all forms of attacks. The event is due to take place on Saturday 24 March in Brussels. The various associations wish for broad participation within civil society to give out a clear signal in favour of a more cohesive society.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is 21 March. The charity Ella says, “The protest must continue after the previous demonstrations in December, January and February, which brought thousands of people onto the streets.”

The organisations are collectively suggesting a series of political demands. Amongst other things, they wish that practical proactive testing be accompanied by penalties, both on the employment market and within the housing sector. They also wish for the authorities to ensure a quality welcome for migrants entering the country, respecting human rights and based upon integration, regulation and fair social treatment, both for new arrivals and undocumented individuals.

The 120 associations vary in size and represent all regions of Belgium. The Human Rights League, the MRAX (anti-racism and anti-xenophobia), Hart Boven Hard (a citizen movement)/Tout Autre Chose (its francophone equivalent) and the Citizen Platform for the Support of Brussels Refugees are included amongst these groups.
